It’s hard to believe, but school’s almost out for summer! And summer is the best time to reset and refresh school facilities. For K12 custodial managers and foodservice teams working with leftover funds from the previous school year or building, now is the time to invest in smarter tools, cleaner spaces, and safer environments for students and staff.

Here’s where to start:

Put Your Remainng Budget to Work

Use it or lose it. Making the right investments now will improve facility and equipment performance, reduce manual effort, and stretch resources further next year. If you’ve got money left, act now:

  • Replace outdated and inefficient cleaning or foodservice equipment with commercial dish machines, the KleenLine Pro Versa, high-efficiency vacuums, and robotic scrubbers to clean better and faster.
  • Stock up on high-use supplies, including EPA-certified disinfectants, food-safe sanitizers, and odor control products.

Refresh Cafeteria Protocols

Improving food safety and workflow now helps prevent compliance issues, delays, and student dissatisfaction later. A safe, efficient kitchen starts with prep:

  • Review last year’s menus and update offerings based on what worked.
  • Streamline busy meal periods with more grab-and-go items.
  • Take inventory of supplies, tools, and expired goods. Make a list of what needs to be replenished, replaced, or repaired.
  • Turn on and test all foodservice equipment to ensure enough lead time for repairs, replacements, or delivery.
  • Organize workshops and training sessions covering the latest food safety regulations, cooking techniques, safe food handling, and customer service best practices.
  • Conduct a deep clean of every surface, including kitchen prep stations, cooking equipment, dining spaces and storage rooms.

Invest in a Healthier School (Including the Spaces You Can't See)

Air quality, allergens, and germs don’t take summers off. Better indoor air leads to fewer absences, improved focus, and a healthier learning environment. Target invisible threats now:

  • Upgrade ventilation systems with HEPA filters and standalone air purifiers to improve air flow.
  • Invest in cleaning equipment with enhanced filtration, cleaning tools that trap and remove particulates, and cleaning chemicals with low or no VOCs -- chemicals that easily evaporate into the air at room temperature.
  • Use bioactive products to remediate odors and trap seals for floor drains; add air purifiers to manage “toilet plume.”
  • Add Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) monitors to detect airborne risks.
  • Use entryway matting to trap outdoor contaminants.

Help School Custodians Work Smarter, Not Harder

Short-staffed? Lighten the load for your team with tools that increase speed, safety, and consistency:

  • Mechanize cleaning processes to streamline maintenance procedures.
  • Deploy automated tools to reduce manual labor.
  • Develop a maintenance schedule to prevent burnout.
  • Stock up now on essentials to avoid shortages during the year.

Future-Fit Your Janitorial Needs with Robotics

Automated tools help you keep pace, even when staff and time are limited. New tech like the X4 and X6 ROVR is helping schools deliver cleaner results faster and reduce team pressure:

  • Automate floor cleaning in open areas with robotic scrubbers that use QR codes for pre-programmed cleaning routes.
  • Train the robot to clean up using intuitive controls and automation that easily integrate into your existing floor cleaning protocols and free up staff for detail work, high-touch zones, and more time for human interaction.
  • Minimize repetitive strain on mundane tasks with better equipment, using lithium-ion batteries, opportunity charging, and a high-capacity charger, whether you need to clean for 2 hours or 15 minutes.

Upgrade Today for a Greener Tomorrow

Eco-friendly choices cut costs, reduce waste, and support long-term district goals. Choose sustainable solutions that save money without compromising performance:

  • Launch a sustainable building program by switching to green cleaning chemicals, refillable systems, and certified tools like microfiber products.
  • Plan an efficient waste diversion and recycling strategy to help achieve building certification standards, including projects pursuing LEED® certification, AASHE STARS® rating21, CIMS-GB certification3, or TRUE2certification.
  • Install eco-friendly mats, such as our regional company WAXIE Sanitary Supply's WAXIE-Green Eco-Mats, made from post-consumer P.E.T. plastic, which prevents bottles from entering landfills and preserves our natural resources.
  • Switch to energy-efficient maintenance alternatives, such as LED lighting, low-flow faucets, and flushers, to reduce energy and water consumption.
